I open to the possibility that there might be some history or something in the image that I'm blind to, that makes it so good, but as I see it now, it doesn't speak to me at all. It find it boring tbh.

Try to convert me!

You're not alone. Still plenty left. I bought into the hype and got one - opened it, looked at it for about 60 seconds, wrapped it back up. I love that these 2 masters work together but frankly their end product(s) leave me unimpressed.

For me, it's kinda like when I heard of Oysterhead - and then actually heard their music.

Anyway, I hope it sells out eventually so I won't feel bad about putting it in the hookup thread for $140. :D

I can appreciate the amount of work that has gone into it, but I can't see it amounted to much. For me the image is just not strong enough.

Again, not trying to be the hater here, I was just curious what the deal was, so I asked. Art doesn't benefit from not being challenged, you know :)

I'm glad ya'll enjoy it! Drink it up :pint:

I dig the image but honestly I'm a bit iffy on the Okapi's face.

Sigh. Not trying to start a "my art is better than yours" argument here. I thought I made that clear, using more than 50 % of my post to explain just that, so that even the most thin-skinned fan boys wouldn't be offended.

I was curious about what attracted people to this piece, so I asked. Appreciation for art isn't always limited to a gut feeling, but often expands by understanding what it is about.

If you can't stand people asking questions about prints they obviously should love, then log off the forum.

Appreciation for the pure talent and hard work involved in the collabs and the solo work from both definitely adds to the piece. Still, I just think it really goes back to the old 'different strokes for different folks' cliche. Plus, if you like or grew up skating, snowboarding; reading Transworld Skate, Thrasher, Bukowski; Pushead on the walls, livin' in the MW tradin' zines, getting busted in Elementary school for passin' around the DK 'Frankenchrist' vinyl insert... the 'style' appeals more. Not sure if that makes sense; don't wanna stereotype, but certain personalities like certain artists, or maybe just 'see' more than others in works from certain artists/styles/subjects...

So Nunavut is a recently-created Canadian province. Its boundaries were set in '99, and it's the huge, frozen top-center section of Canada. It's a land mass the size of Western Europe with a population of about 32,000, which makes it one of the most sparsely populated regions on Earth -- not to mention one of the most remote, with one of the harshest climates.

The region was created as kind of a half-assed way to "give back" to all the displaced indigenous peoples. Currently the population is about 85% Inuit, and they'd been there for over 4,000 years -- except, in the 1950s, Canada and the US decided they might need the area for strategic missile bases, and they kicked all the natives out to an even worse place than Nunavut. There was starvation, there was hell on Earth, there was, you know, the kind of stuff that white people do to brown people.

So Nunavut was created and essentially handed over, though Canada never and will never officially apologize for the near-genocide stemming from their dire need to maybe build a missile silo. Life isn't exactly great there, as the citizens are forced to pay exorbitant rates for even the most basic foods:

The Wiki on the territory:

OK class, so now that we see all this...who wants to discuss how this print's imagery relates to the story of the region? Don't everyone raise their hands at once.

I had originally thought it was like a, "hey bro we're still here," kind of thing with the species presented in the print. You've got a universally recognized species that is extinct but two other species that are currently surviving yet aren't on anyone's radar. A play on "dead and forgotten" basically.

With the title relating to the the indigenous people of Canada I guess the same message can be applied to them. When you hear about indigenous people you think of Inuits and Native Americans in the past primarily. We all grow up learning about their culture and the events leading up to their demise but in my experience current events aren't addressed. They are forever associated with the past because the rest of us don't see them as current. Their culture is similar to the Okapi's appearance to people; a blast from the past. So their well recognized past is represented in the well known Mammoth and their current relatively little known existence is represented by the Okapi and the other.

If you wanted to really read into it, the fire in the Mammoth's skull could be the Inuit's need to keep the fire burning culturally for the people before them who were the most affected by European encroachment. I guess if they move away from past traditions they're left out in the cold in a way because their culture wasn't allowed to evolve naturally to present day.
