The Engine Room, Fat Cat's (Mary's), Numbers, and Walter's (all of them in Houston) used to be the venues where good bands made their stops before Warehouse Live showed up, and the renovated Fitzgerald's made its comeback. Run down, hole-in-the-wall places now replaced by bigger, stronger venues. They are all still there except for Fat Cat's, I believe...

I caught the Beta Band, and then M.I.A. a couple of months later, in that place (Engine Room)...
